Gynaecology and reproduction
A Veterinarian - Reproduction Specialist can help you solve various problems related to your pet‘s reproductive system.
Most usual surgical interventions and/or procedures:
1. Sterilisation (castration and sterilisation):
• Castration: males undergo surgical intervention to remove the testicles for prevention of unwanted mating, reduction of the risk of certain diseases, and reduction of the level of aggression.
• Sterilisation: females undergo surgery to remove their ovaries and uterus to prevent unplanned pregnancies and reduce hormone-related health problems. Sterilisation is also possible using a laparoscope in our veterinary clinic.
2. Artificial insemination:
• it is a procedure, during which sperm is introduced into the female reproductive system to fertilize her. This procedure can be useful in case of problems with natural mating or to preserve the gene pool of certain breeds.
3. Caesarean section:
• it is a surgical procedure performed during birth when natural birth is dangerous or impossible. This surgery may be necessary due to excessive foetal size, improper foetal position, or other complications.
4. Pregnancy care and foetal ultrasound examination:
• ultrasound examination helps monitor the progress of pregnancy and determine the condition of the foetus. It is important to anticipate possible complications and take actions on time.
Situations when you need to contact a Veterinary Reproduction Specialist:
1. Fertility problems:
• if your pet is unable to conceive after several mating attempts or if the male is unable to fertilise the female, you have to consult a specialist.
2. Pregnancy complications:
• if the female has health problems during pregnancy, or you notice unusual symptoms (for instance, bleeding, severe vomiting, unusual behaviour), it is necessary to consult a Veterinarian immediately.
3. Birth complications:
• if labour lasts longer than 24 hours or if the foetus does not come out after several strong contractions, you have to contact your Veterinarian immediately.
4. Behavioural changes in males:
• if the male becomes aggressive, too sexually active, or has urinary problems, it is worth visiting a veterinary specialist.
5. Postpartum complications:
• various problems may arise after birth, such as uterine infections, inflammation of the mammary glands (mastitis), or lack of milk. In this case, a Veterinarian assistance is required.
Regular consultation with a Veterinary Reproduction Specialist will ensure that your pet’s reproductive system is properly maintained and any problems are addressed timely and effectively.
