Laparoscopic diagnostics
Laparoscopic procedures in veterinary medicine are minimally invasive surgical methods using a special equipment - laparoscope - to perform various surgical interventions in dogs and cats. These procedures are being used more and more due to their benefits for both the pet and the owner.
What is the laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is a procedure, during which a laparoscope with a camera is inserted into the abdominal cavity through small incisions (usually 0.5–1 cm). This allows the Surgeon to see internal organs on a high-definition screen and perform surgical interventions with minimal tissue damage.
What procedures are performed by laparoscopy?
In veterinary medicine, laparoscopic procedures can be performed for a variety of surgical interventions, including:
• Castration and/or sterilization: less pain and faster healing.
• Examination of abdominal cavity: to diagnose various pathologies of internal organs.
• Organ biopsies: taking samples of liver, kidneys, pancreas and other organs.
• Removal of certain cysts and tumours: gentler healing with a lower risk of postoperative complications.
Advantages compared to usual surgery:
• Smaller incisions: lower risk of bleeding and infections.
• Less pain: pets recover faster after surgery.
• Faster healing: pets return to their normal rhythm of life more quickly.
• Shorter hospitalisation: the pet can often return home the same day.
• More accurate diagnostics: high-resolution images allow the Surgeon to see the surgical area better.
Post-operative care:
After the laparoscopic procedure, the pet is given minimal care, but it is important to monitor its condition, follow the Veterinarian’s instructions regarding medication use and wound care. In most cases, pets feel better and more active after just a few days.
