Intensive therapy – care
A canine and feline hospital – an intensive care unit is a place where your pet gets specialized care and treatment when its health condition requires constant monitoring and intensive therapy. This can be a vital step in ensuring a pet’s survival and recovery from serious illnesses, injuries, or complex surgeries.
What procedures are performed in the hospital?
1. Continuous monitoring of vital signs:
• the pets are constantly monitored in the hospital for the stability of their condition. This includes controlling heart rate, breathing, body temperature, blood pressure, and oxygen levels in the blood. Monitoring vital signs helps to identify any changes timely and respond to them quickly.
2. Intravenous therapy (IV therapy):
• this therapy consists of administering fluids, electrolytes, medications, or nutrients directly into a vein to stabilize the pet’s condition. IV therapy is often required for pet that are dehydrated, poisoned, in shock, or unable to take food and water by mouth.
3. Pain control:
• effective pain control is ensured in the hospital by administering analgesics, opiates or other painkillers for pets experiencing severe pain due to injury, surgical interventions or other medical conditions.
4. Oxygen therapy:
• oxygen therapy may be used if the pet experiences breathing difficulties or has low oxygen levels in its blood. This may be necessary for pneumonia, heart failure, a severe asthma attack, or other breathing problems.
5. Laboratory and diagnostic imaging tests:
• pets may be regularly examined in the hospital using blood, urine, X-rays, ultrasound and other tests to assess their condition and determine further treatment.
6. Specialized therapies:
• specific therapies, such as antitoxic agents in case of poisoning, blood transfusion in case of severe anaemia, or intensive care after a complex surgical intervention, may be applied depending on the pet’s condition.
7. Nutrition and fluid balance:
• pets that are unable to feed themselves may be given parenteral or enteral nutrition to ensure adequate nutrient and calorie intake. Fluid balance is also provided in the hospital to prevent dehydration or fluid overload.
What are the cases of pet hospitalisation?
1. After complex surgical operations:
• the pet may be hospitalized to ensure proper postoperative care and prevent complications after major surgeries, such as internal surgery, orthopaedic surgery, or tumour removal.
2. Serious injuries or accidents:
• pets that have suffered serious injuries, such as car accidents, falls from heights, or other accidents, may be hospitalized for intensive therapy and stabilization of vital functions.
3. Life-threatening conditions:
• the pet may require continuous inpatient care in case of life-threatening conditions, such as severe heart failure, respiratory problems, kidney failure, or severe poisoning.
4. Poisonings:
• pets that have been poisoned by toxic substances, such as chemicals, plants or drugs, may be hospitalized for emergency care, detoxification, and monitoring.
5. Serious infections:
• infectious diseases such as parvovirus infection, leptospirosis, sepsis, or severe pneumonia may require intensive care and constant monitoring to prevent complications.
6. Severe dehydration or electrolyte imbalance:
• pets with severe dehydration or electrolyte imbalance may be hospitalized for intravenous fluid therapy and monitoring.
7. Exacerbation of a chronic disease:
• pets with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, kidney failure, or heart disease, may be hospitalized if their condition worsens and requires more intensive care and treatment.
